Beyonce’s out here running the world and having multiples mean while I’m just out here trying to work my 9-5 and keep up with one little mischievous pup, but I couldn’t be happier!
Let me start by giving you a little bit of my pet history... Basically there isn't any. Zip, zilch, nada. In fact I come from a family that in general just wasn't big on pets. None of my close relatives had them. So naturally I always grew up wanting a pet. I mean what kid didn’t!? I'd whine and complain nearly every Christmas but that puppy never came. (My mom is also allergic or so she said, which may have been the main reason we never had a pet.) As an adult it became that gift you'd always mention to your boyfriend casually (because a puppy without a co parent wasn't an option for me) never actually expecting to receive it...that is until my current boyfriend.
Let's get a puppy! I blurt out one day and to my horror he thinks it's a great idea. (What a stand up guy. lol) Yes, I always claimed I wanted a puppy but did I REALLY want a puppy? As soon as he was on board I was terrified. I definitely hadn’t thought this all the way through. I envisioned my furniture torn and my shoes chewed. A disaster! At this point of course now I have to follow through with this puppy thing after making such a big deal about wanting one.
Fast forward to now and I am currently the proud dog mom and co parent of Mocha Kobe Stephens a 1yr 4mo old puppy whom we adopted from our local Prison Harbor Pet Rescue program. Yes I said prison and that is an entire blog post in itself. Anyways having a puppy is a lot of fun and they have so much love to give but this post isn’t about that. It's about what really goes down when you have a puppy. It's nothing like you see in the movies or on tv. Now this post is not to sway you from getting that puppy or pet you've always dreamed of it's just a wake up call. A reality check so you can be prepared. More so than I was...
Say goodbye to your personal space. Mocha has no concept of personal space. Prepare yourself. Mocha loves to come with a ½” of my face and just stare. I’m talking #mannequinchallenge, no blinking, death stare.
That saying "follow you around like a lost puppy," it's true. So very true. However Mocha is not lost. He is at his home a place he is very familiar with. Wherever you go, they go. If you even think about getting up to go somewhere they are already up and ahead of you. You move he's right on your tail.
Oh by the way! Dogs have to poop at night, who knew? When it's my turn to take Mocha out at night it always seems darker than dark, like pitch black, WTF? I hear all sort of things and I always swear there's some creeper standing off in the distance. However it's usually just a shadow or tree. Needless to say I'm scared, Mocha's scared. It is sometimes just a disaster all around. Thankfully as he's gotten older and into a routine he goes right out and does his business without us having to go through all the dramatics.
Every dog has its thing. That little quirky thing he does or likes that can’t be explained. Never in my 28 years did I think there would come a point in my life that I would have to strategically hide socks from a puppy. Socks is his thing. Clean or dirty it doesn’t matter. If it’s a pair of socks even better.
I used to love a good happy hour right after work or a quick shopping trip. Nope that's now out of the question. You're on doggy duty and you have to rush home to take care of your pup like a responsible puppy parent would. And once you're home that’s it. You're most likely in for the night.
Can any other #dogmoms relate?

Much like the "little black dress" the "little black tote" can be found in every woman's arsenal. It represents her go-to tote, bag, or purse that she wouldn't dare leave home without. It's filled with what she finds essential and a few surprises tucked in there too. This blog is just that! My little black tote.
